Michael Jordan’s massive Chicago home is still on the market 10 years later.
-
Michael Jordan tried to sweeten the pot by nearly halving the price and tossing out a whole bunch of Air Jordans with the home purchase.
-
Pays more than $100,000 in annual property taxes.
-
“Anytime you have these homes that are just kind of a total area improvement, it leads to very, very long market times,” said Gail Lissner of Integra Realty Resources.
-
The home was originally listed for $29 million and has every bell and whistle you can think of. Some of the “extra improvements” that Lesnar might refer to are the swimming pool with a grassy island in its center, a door from the Playboy mansion, a table standing on the streets of Baghdad, and golf flags bearing the MG mark.

Below, we take a closer look at the home and why it’s struggling to find a buyer. Most of the pictures are from Screenshots provided by Concierge Auctions.

Michael Jordan’s 56,000-square-foot, 7-acre complex looks massive even from the air.
Anyone who gets close to the grounds can tell right away that this estate belongs to the legendary #23, Michael Jordan – and that might be what’s keeping it from being sold. “It’s obviously his home,” said Bruce Bowers of Bowers Realty Group. “…there is a lot of work to be done to make it your own.”

The price of the home has dropped several times and is now $14.9 million, or about $265 per square foot — a far cry from the original $517 per square foot price. The exact price is $14,855,000, and the numbers in that price add up to 23 – Jordan’s basketball jersey number.
The long distance from the gate and full trees ensure that the house enjoys complete privacy.
Jordan had the house – and the property around it – from scratch to his personal taste.
The outdoor space proves to be amazing. There is a tennis court…
… an infinity pool with a grassy island in the middle …
…which is located in the middle of a large courtyard…
… and down on the grass is a golf course.
The green is completed with the Jordan brand flag sticks.
There is also a pond full of fish.
While the outside space is sprawling and undoubtedly impressive…
…the interior is equally stunning. When guests first walk in the front door, they are greeted by this view, which includes a piano in the background.
The piano room doubles as one of the home’s many sitting rooms.
Here’s a look at another sitting area dubbed the “Wonderful Room” – though, this isn’t the only great room around the house.
Jordan’s luxurious flair is evident in details such as the entrances. The door set shown below is from the original Playboy Mansion in Chicago.
They are led to a games room with a pool table.
Of course, since this is the former home of Michael Jordan, there is a full-field basketball court. It is the centerpiece of the house.
The court has the name of the legend from both sides…
…and the Jumpman logo in the District Court which includes the names of his children – his daughter’s name is out of sight.
While guests wait for their turn on the playground, they can hang out in this seating area.
Moving into the dining room, guests could eat at the “Baghdad Table”.
This tabletop grid is based on the streets of Baghdad.
Detailed dining areas are somewhat of a theme. Here we can see a beautiful alcove perfectly placed above the kitchen table.
In one of the dining areas off the kitchen is a large aquarium built into the wall.
The house has nine bedrooms…
…and 19 bathrooms. 19!
There is also an intricately decorated cigar room with a hinged ceiling.
Even the balustrade in the cigar room is ornate.
The cigar room also has plenty of card tables where we think Jordan played some high stakes poker – he’s known for his love of gambling, after all.
The house also has a full gym.
The Bulls’ teammates in Jordan used to work there every morning, according to an interview shared by Concierge Auctions.
Another luxurious part of the Jordan estate is the spacious wine cellar.
The library upstairs was said to be MJ’s favorite room. Features a drop-down movie screen.
Between the house and the patio is another 110-inch TV room.
This area used to be an indoor pool. Jordan renovated it after moving and added sliding walls on both sides that could make the gathering room either indoor or outdoor depending on the mood and weather.
There are plenty of media rooms throughout the house. Even seemingly random angles like these below have TVs.
The property also includes a three-bedroom guest house…
… which has a family room and kitchen.
MJ has lived in the main house for 19 years.
The house is fully furnished, although some pieces may be old.
Although the house is gorgeous, it has been on the market since 2012. Jordan attempted to auction the house in 2013, but the minimum bid of $13 million was not met.
“Many of the most sought-after items in the world are auctioned off, and Concierge Auctions are the leading company when it comes to auctioning one-of-a-kind properties,” Jordan said.
MJ’s property has remained unsold despite attempts at creativity, including marketing to the wealthy in basketball-obsessed China.

In 2015, the agent who was selling the house at the time promised that the buyer would also get every Air Jordans his or her size — but that didn’t work out either.

Adam Rosenfeld, of luxury real estate startup Mercer Vine, told Marketwatch in 2016 that Jordan was likely struggling to sell the home due to all the personal customizations.

Rosenfeld said the home is also not in an area where wealthy celebrities are looking for homes. Jill Lesnar of Integra Realty Resources described the area as “more modest” than the Jordan properties would suggest.

You don’t have to worry about the house rotting and not selling. The house is still occupied by the staff Jordan hired to keep it looking fresh.

Jordan still pays a lot of property taxes. The annual bill is more than $130,000, and Zillow estimates that he has paid more than $2.5 million in property taxes since it was brought to market in 2012.
One problem is that Jordan may feel that his celebrity status is adding value to a home, but according to Stephen Shapiro of Westside Agency, people don’t pay more for a home just because a famous person owns it.

“But you know who is inclined to think the property is worth more because a celebrity lived there?” Shapiro said. “Celebrities are trying to sell it.”

Another issue is the location. Most homes in this price range are located in this area near Lake Michigan, a few miles east of the former Jordan home. “Buyers at this level in that area tend to want to be closer to the lake,” Missy Gervita of Berkshire Hathaway Homes Services told The Real Deal.

Since putting his Chicago home on the market, Jordan has since purchased a North Carolina lakefront home in a community with golf courses.
The house is located in Cornelius, about a 30-minute drive from the Charlotte Hornets – Jordan owns the NBA team. MJ bought the house for $2.8 million after it was originally listed for $4 million.

Jordan also reportedly bought a home on a golf course in Jupiter, Florida, for $4.8 million in 2013, and spent $7.6 million on renovations.

He also owns an apartment in downtown Charlotte, in the same building as Cam Newton. The apartments are said to range between $1.5 and 3.5 million.

Recently, Jordan listed his 10,000-square-foot home in Park City, Utah, for $7.5 million. Experts believe it will likely sell faster than the Chicago complex.

Buyer continues to wait for a Chicago area home. Of course, MJ is valued at $1.9 billion, so he can wait for the right owner to come along at his old Chicago digs.
